Traditional cooperative cheese dairies known as fruitières à Comté have been a Jura fixture for hundreds of years. Today, four “fruitières vinicoles”, or wine cooperatives, operate on similar lines, pooling resources to support an entire sector.

The first of these was the Fruitière Vinicole d’Arbois. Launched in 1906, its winemakers have always worked together to defend their interests, making the cooperative an excellent example of the region’s sense of solidarity. Proud of their collaborative efforts, the members are eager to share their values and know-how through tailor-made workshops: an introduction to wine tasting, a vertical tasting of a comprehensive selection of vins jaunes, and more. At Château Béthanie, which produces wine using five traditional Jura grape varieties, a personalised experience awaits visitors all year round!

The wine region of Arbois can also be explored by electric bike, with key highlights including the Fruitière Vinicole de Poligny, whose winery is also a historic site, the Caveau des Jacobins.

Pupillin is a typical Jura wine region village filled with references to wine, from its streets named after Jura grape varieties and squares decorated with barrels and presses. To cap it all the village is decked with flowers that add to the splendour of the beautifully renovated winemaker’s houses laid out along the riverbank. No visit to the village would be complete without a visit to its fruitière and relaxed wine tasting cellar.

The Fruitière Vinicole de Voiteur has around 60 members, all committed to an environmentally-friendly approach (“Terra vitis” or organic). The 80 hectares of vines that form the cooperative are mostly in the Jura AOC and include the famous “Château-Chalon”.

Further south, the cooperative in the small commune of Vernois and its Caveau des Byards consists of 17 winemakers who produce high-grade grapes based on a quality charter. They bottle their wines collectively under the “Côtes du Jura”, “L’Étoile”, “Crémant du Jura” and “Château-Chalon” AOCs. After the tasting, there’s time for a stroll among the vines on one of the many footpaths that Vernois has to offer!
